History of the Sunbury Motor Company
It was in 1915 that an automobile business was born. Sunbury Motors founder, J.O.
Mertz, started selling Ford Model-Ts in Northumberland as a sub-dealer for the Ford Motor
Company. Ten years later, he purchased property on Fifth & Arch St. and established Sunbury
Motor Company. His sons, Wilson and Charles, operated the company until their sons, Bob and
Dick Mertz, became active in 1961. By 1968, they had outgrown the original Fifth & Arch St.
location and purchased property on North 4th St. that was occupied by Boyer Chevrolet. To this
day, the North 4th St. property is used for new Ford and used vehicle sales. In the early 1980s,
the next expansion occurred; land was purchased behind the North 4th St. sales department
and a state-of-the-art complex was built to house both the parts and service departments of
Sunbury Motors.
In 1988, Dick's son and current president/CEO, Tom, joined his father and second cousin,
Bob, to continue the succession of the Mertz family as the fourth generation of the family-run
business. Under Tom, Sunbury Motors added a Kia franchise, a Lincoln-Mercury franchise, a
Western Star heavy truck franchise, and a Hyundai franchise.
Kias were sold out of the North 4th St. showroom from 1998 to 2001. Afterwards, land
was purchased on Routes 11/15 in Hummels Wharf and a new Kia showroom was built.
Sunbury Motors Kia continues to operate out of this location.
In August of 2002, the Lincoln-Mercury franchises were added to the Ford lineup in
Sunbury and in early 2003, the Mertz family purchased the former BiLo Supermarket and
parking lot adjacent to the Ford Showroom and the parts and service department. By the end of
2003, the Ford sales department was fully renovated. The BiLo Supermarket was renovated
shortly after the Ford sales department.
In 2007, Sunbury Motors acquired the Hyundai franchise. Both the Western Star heavy
truck franchise and the Hyundai store continue to operate out of the formally renovated BiLo
Supermarket. The Lincoln-Mercury franchises were eventually sold in the early 2000s.
Tom's son, Kyle Mertz, is now the fifth generation of the Mertz family owning and
operating Sunbury Motors and plans to follow in his family's footsteps.
